Programmes using marae-based concepts such as waiata, wairuatanga, te reo māori and kotahitanga to help kaumātua grow in confidence, have featured on news website Stuff.

For 11 years Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services has been working with Wainuiomata Marae to provide a programme that helps kaumātua improve their health.

In April 2017 it started the programme at Te Mangungu Marae, in Naenae.​
