The 3DHBs have produced a combined Health Needs Assessment

For the first time the 3DHBs have produced a combined Health Needs Assessment, a recognised public health tool which will be used to better meet population health needs and accurately inform service planning.

Key findings include:

  • By 2033, more than one in five people in the sub-region will be aged over 65 years, and the population aged 85+ will more than double in all 3DHBs.
  • PHO enrolment coverage is estimated to be greater than 95% across the sub-region; however utilisation rates for Hutt Valley are lower than national averages. Practice nurse utilisation was higher than the national average across all three DHBs.
  • Compared with a 5% increase nationwide, Emergency Department (ED) attendance rates at Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast increased by around 20%, and declined 24% at Wairarapa over the past five years.
  • The acute inpatient admission rate has been fairly static for Wairarapa; however it has increased in the last five years for Hutt Valley (10%) and Capital & Coast (18%).

The data presented in this 3DHB Health Needs Assessment outlines key areas of focus for each DHB, and presents greater opportunities for clinical leadership and stronger partnership with primary and community care providers over the coming years.
