She might not know it, but six-month-old Charlotte just helped launch Hutt Hospital's new staff breastfeeding room.

Along with her mum, Hutt Valley District Health Board midwife Amanda Perry, and sister Mia, Charlotte visited the room that was created by HVDHB lactation consultant and midwife Victoria Jewson on February 14.

Staff are welcome to use the room - it's on the first floor of the Heretaunga Building opposite the laboratory - to breastfeed and pump their breastmilk during their working hours. The code for the door can be obtained by contacting the Lactation Consultants (ext 2556 or 5872556).

Amanda described the facility as a great asset to the hospital.

"A dedicated space for mothers to breastfeed is really important," she said.

"It is user friendly and easy to access."

The private room features a pair of comfortable modern chairs, foot rest, and basic amenities.

Victoria said she decided to create it after noticing the need from other staff.

"I was approached by a member of staff who was breastfeeding her baby during her lunch breaks.

"She was using a room shared with another hospital worker with inadequate facilities and a lack of privacy."

She took on the project as a quality initiative with support from the maternity quality team.

"I am pleased to unveil the new staff breastfeeding room.

"It is a quiet, comfortable and private space with a breastfeeding chair with baby changing facilities.

"It is important that mothers are supported and encouraged to continue breastfeeding once they return to work.
