Hutt Valley DHB’s hand hygiene is on the rise with compliance rates growing by over six per cent in the last quarter.

The DHB’s compliance rate since 31 March 2015 is 66.3%, as compared to 60.40% over the previous quarter to October 31 2014. Compliance has increased from 50 to 60% for the previous 12 month period.

Health professionals collected 2087 moments which is more than the required 1750.

The DHB acknowledged the achievement of its Special Care Baby Unit for best hand hygiene compliance of 78.8% in the last quarter. Allied Health (pictured above) was also recognised for most improved health care group for the audit period ending 31 March.

However the Hutt Valley DHB is still at the bottom of the table for national standards of DHB hand hygiene.

Helen Golds, Clinical Nurse Specialist Infection Prevention Control, says healthcare workers still find it difficult to understand the need to perform hand hygiene especially when using gloves.

“This will be an on-going area of education for this DHB and we will be continuing to provide education sessions focused on the critical moments when hand hygiene should be performed. This has been well received to date and appears to be making a difference. We are seeing improvements and engagement from all ward areas.”

Helen says at present compliance rate is around 77% with 500 moments of hand hygiene.
