Chris Mallon, Service Manager for Women and Children has extended a warm welcome to five new midwife graduates who recently qualified and will be working in the Hutt Valley.

Chrysta Alexander, Elizabeth Duncan and Trudy Manera say they are inspired by women’s health and are looking forward to supporting expectant mothers through their pregnancy journeys.

“I think that if women have the right support from the beginning of their pregnancy it leads to improved outcomes in the future, “says Trudy. “I think it is important that women feel empowered to make their own decisions about how they want to give birth,” adds Elizabeth.

“I think we play an important role in keeping birth normal and avoiding unnecessary interventions.”

While Chrysta, Elizabeth and Trudy will be based at the hospital, a further two midwives will be out in the community as community Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) Sarah Carr and Meg Lamason also recently completed the Bachelor of Midwifery through the University of Otago.

Meg, who has three children of her own decided to make the change from the corporate world as an operations manager to midwife. She says that it was the right time for her to move into a role where she could make a positive difference in the lives of families in the community.

Like Meg, Sarah made the change from sales and events manager and says it was not a decision made lightly.

They are looking forward to be able to assist families as they grow and both feel they have found the roles they were looking for.

“We have a case load already and it has been great to be able to meet the women who we will be working with,” says Sarah.
