Hutt Valley DHB (HVDHB) is well-prepared to ensure patients are safe during a planned national doctor’s strike.

Junior doctors who are members of the New Zealand Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) will withdraw their services from DHBs around the country for 48 hours between 7am on 18 October and 7am on 20 October, said HVDHB Chief Operating Officer Dale Oliff.

All hospital services will be reduced during this time. The Emergency Department (ED) will still be open but only for emergencies, she said.

“Unless it’s an emergency, people should contact their GP or after-hours medical centre. This will help ensure our ED staff remain free to help those who need it the most.”

Dale Oliff said HVDHB is experienced in managing resources during times of unusual pressure on its services, for example during significant ‘flu outbreaks, and has activated a contingency plan to ensure its readiness.

“We’re well prepared and well organised. People can be confident that in the event of serious illness they and their families will receive the same treatment and care they can expect at any time.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause for our patients and want to reassure everyone in the Hutt Valley community that our number one consideration throughout the 48-hour strike period is the safety of our patients.”

More detailed information about services during the strike is available on the Hutt Valley DHB website.
