The Hutt Valley Curtain Bank project is the result of 15 months' planning and preparation by a steering group which is chaired by Regional Public Health and includes representation from Housing New Zealand, Upper Hutt City Council and Earthlink Inc.
The curtain bank, based at Earthlink in Upper Hutt, was officially opened by Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy on 22 May 2010. Shirley Cressy, Earthlink, is pictured with Barry Gall, Regional Public Health at the launch.
The curtain bank stocks curtains, mostly second-hand, donated by local families and businesses. Those with Community Services Cards are eligible for free curtains, with priority going to those with health needs. An application form needs to be completed and signed by a local health or community worker.
Please click here for the application form.
At present, the curtain bank is open for appointments on Wednesday mornings from 10-12 and this will extend to Thursdays and Friday as more volunteers come on board.
The curtain bank needs donated curtains and volunteers, including people with sewing skills to alter existing curtains and make new ones from rolls of donated material. Curtains can also be sold and this will make the venture financially sustainable.
Earthlink is situated at Unit 2, 26 Goodshed Rd, Upper Hutt
