The Wellington Regional Plastic, Maxillofacial and Burns unit (based at Hutt hospital) treats 12,000 people a year. As well as their clinical work, many staff members undertake research and contribute to national and international scientific conferences.

Professor Swee Tan, Director of Surgery and Consultant Plastic and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeon, Hutt Valley DHB, and his research Team have won a major international science prize for research into strawberry birthmarks.

Professor Tan and his research Team Dr Helen Brasch, Pathologist, Hutt Valley DHB, Dr Darren Day, Senior Lecturer, School of Biological Sciences, Victoria University, and Tinte Itinteang, PhD student, Victoria University, won the John Mulliken Prize for the best science paper at the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies conference in April this year.

The New Zealand Listener (July 10, 2010) profiles Professor Tan, and the work his Team has done to set up the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. The institute is hosted at Hutt hospital, and was launched in May 2009.
